Not a farewell song

Not a farewell song

A singer, actor, and social activist, Harry Belafonte rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s with
singles such as “Jump in the line” and “Banana boat song.” One of the earliest African-
american entertainers to find fame in the mainstream media, a platform he thoroughly used to
promote civil rights.

Belafonte had a significant impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Along with helping to fund
and plan the Freedom Rides and the March on Washington, he collaborated closely with Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. He also performed at rallies and charities during the 60s to spread
messages of Justice and Hope.

Moreover, Belafonte had championed a number of humanitarian issues, such as eradication of
world poverty while raising awareness on HIV/AIDS. He formed group named, USA for
Africa, which generated millions of dollars for famine affected Ethiopia. In addition to his
civil rights advocacy, Belafonte served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Even though he won’t be back for many a day, Belafonte’s legacy would be felt in music and
liberation!
